Mesothelioma and Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors are often thought of as the doctor one visits when having back problems or pain.

But chiropractic care can do much more than just treat back and spine ailments.

For example, according to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractors:

“have a deep respect for the human body’s ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medication. These doctors devote careful attention to…

  1. biomechanics
  2. structure and function of the spine
  3. its effects on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems
  4. and the role played by the proper function of these systems in the preservation and restoration of health.

A doctor of chiropractic is one who is involved in the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the promotion of public health, and a wellness approach to patient healthcare.”

Some cancer patients have added chiropractic care into their treatment routine to help control pain and relieve headaches, tension and stress.

Alleviating these symptoms and treatment side effects can make the treatment process much easier and more comfortable for cancer patients, including those diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Chiropractic Care & Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that forms in the mesothelial cells that make up the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen.  The primary cause of this cancer is exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral that was used extensively in construction throughout the 20th century because of its durability and resistance to fire.

The majority of cases are diagnosed when the cancer is advanced because symptoms can take anywhere from 20 to 50 years to become noticeable.

In 2001, a study was published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics that observed a 54-year-old man who was diagnosed with lung cancer.

The study showed that a patient who had undergone surgery to remove the cancer was still experiencing a significant amount of pain for a year afterward. In an attempt to remedy the situation, he began seeing a chiropractor.

After the first 2 visits to the chiropractor he was able to stop using all of his pain medications.

This is a great example of how chiropractic care can improve a cancer patient’s quality of life.

What are the Top Rated Treatments for Back Pain?

backpainAnyone who has suffered from chronic back pain knows how much it can affect your quality of life.  And the “standard” treatments for back pain may involve surgery, physical therapy, and medication.

So how many people are affected by back pain in the U.S.?

Well, a massive survey conducted by Consumer Reports not long ago indicated that roughly 80% of the population have been bothered by back pain at some time.

And more than half of the respondents mentioned that their pain severely limited their daily routine for a week or longer.  Additionally,88% said that they pain recurred throughout the year:

“Many said the pain interfered with sleep, sex, and efforts to maintain a healthy weight”

Back Pain and Chiropractic

Admittedly, the Consumer Reports article mentioned that “back pain can be tough to treat.”

In surveying 14,000 people for their report, the survey asked people to rate the treatments they received for their chronic back pain.

The responses indicated that…

“hands on therapies, led by chiropractic care, were the top rated treatments for people suffering from back pain.”

The survey uncovered something else.  It was noted that chiropractors were given the highest “satisfaction with care” ratings form those who participated in the survey.

What’s more, their ratings were well above the average of those given to medical doctors who administered various forms of care to back pain sufferers.

Back Pain and Medication

It goes without saying that the most common treatment for pain in the United States is through the use of prescription medication.

For example, Dr. Orly Avitzur who is a board certified neurologist and medical adviser to Consumers’ Union, noted that half of the survey respondents who reported they had been given a prescription drug for pain relief were treated with opioids.

She further said that the use of these drugs result in adverse effects for about half of the people who take them.

This is why she “almost always prescribes hands on treatments.”

She further states that the survey demonstrates that chiropractic care is very successful at treating back pain.
